Championship Friday ( Click here for schedule and results ) at the Rain City VW Cup was nothing short of spectacular. The final day of the tournament saw thrilling matches, hard-fought battles, and moments of pure skill and determination as teams vied for gold and silver. Whether through round-robin standings or closely contested championship finals, the competition highlighted the spirit of youth soccer. A heartfelt thank you to all the players, coaches, parents, and volunteers who made this day such a success. Here’s a brief recap of each division:
U9 Girls Piatto Pizzeria Division The U9 Girls championship featured a clash of contrasting styles. CBS (Spingle), known for their solid defensive play, took on a high-scoring Mt. Pearl (Black) team. Throughout the tournament, CBS demonstrated discipline and teamwork, which proved to be decisive in the final. Despite relentless pressure from Mt. Pearl’s attackers, CBS held their ground and edged out a 2-1 victory in a thrilling contest. Players of the Winning Team:

U10 Boys VW Jetta Division Drama and excitement defined the VW Jetta Division. St. John's (Chaulk) emerged victorious, but their path to the title was anything but straightforward. A pivotal game against the Crazy 8's set the tone for the day. The match featured an early stunner by Andrew Burke of the Crazy 8's, who scored with a brilliant free kick. However, St. John’s dug deep, with Charlie Martin equalizing and Isaac Tulk eventually scoring the game-winner in a gripping 3-2 victory. A convincing win over NEUSC (Kelly) later in the day secured the championship for St. John’s. The Crazy 8’s fought valiantly and earned a well-deserved silver medal. Players of the Winning Team:

U10 Boys VW Golf Division An all-Feildians final saw FAA (Halliday) face off against the Double Blues in a gripping rematch. Drew Pike’s long-range strike had given FAA the edge in their earlier encounter, but the Double Blues did well to limit opportunities in the final. It was Leo MacDonald who stepped up, scoring the game-winning goal to secure a 2-1 victory for the Double Blues. The back-and-forth battle showcased the depth of talent in both teams, leaving spectators in awe of their skill and determination. Players of the Winning Team:

U11 Boys Tiguan Division CBS (Snook) were the team to beat in this division, and they showed exactly why in the championship game. Their potent offense, combined with disciplined defense, proved too much for Mt. Pearl (Black). CBS dominated the final, scoring five goals and showcasing their depth and coordination. Despite Mt. Pearl’s best efforts, CBS's attacking force was unstoppable, earning them the gold medal in commanding fashion. Players of the Winning Team:

U11 Boys Taos Division The U11 Taos Division was marked by parity, with every team managing at least one win during the tournament. St. John’s (Foran) stood out for their consistency, finishing at the top of the table. While both FAA teams, Mt. Pearl and NEUSC had moments of grit and skill, St. John’s found ways to come out on top in tight games. In the end, Mt. Pearl (Peddle) claimed silver, while St. John’s (Foran) celebrated their well-earned gold. Players of the Winning Team:

U12 Boys Atlas Division The U12 final lived up to its billing as a rematch between St. John’s (Murphy) and FAA (Courage). FAA had claimed a 3-1 victory earlier in the tournament, but St. John’s turned the tables when it mattered most. The final saw FAA take an early lead with a penalty shot expertly converted by Louis Winter. However, St. John’s regrouped and equalized through Mason Reynolds before Josh Veitch’s late goal put St. John’s ahead for good. A final-second strike from Adam Abdul Wahid added insurance and clinched the VW Cup for St. John’s in a match filled with intensity and heart. Players of the Winning Team:

U13 Boys VW Buzz Division The U13 Buzz Division was fiercely competitive from start to finish, with teams trading blows throughout the tournament. FAA (Chitsike), CBS (Lewis), and St. John’s (Devereaux) all impressed, but it was CBS who secured the top spot. In the final, CBS struck early and held firm, defeating St. John’s 4-2 in a match that highlighted their offensive firepower and tactical discipline. The victory capped a stellar tournament for CBS, who lifted the VW Cup in this premier division. Championship Games Set in U12 and U13 Boys Divisions; Others Still Wide Open!!

Day 2 of the Rain City VW Cup (click for schedule and standings) delivered non-stop action, with 39 games played and countless moments of skill, determination, and teamwork. The competition was fierce, but sportsmanship shone bright, making the day a true celebration of youth soccer. A big thank you to all the players, coaches, parents, and volunteers who made today such a success!
While there were too many standout performances to list them all, here’s a quick snapshot of the day’s highlights across divisions:
Girls U9 Piatto Pizzeria Division Mt. Pearl (Black) put on a clinic in their first two games, tallying an impressive 11 goals to secure two decisive wins. CBS (Spingle) demonstrated exceptional defensive prowess, conceding just one goal over two matches to remain in contention. The stage is set for an exciting finish tomorrow as these two teams battle for supremacy.
Boys U10 VW Jetta Division The Crazy 8's have taken the division by storm, claiming victories over NEUSC (Kelly) and FAA (Tobin). However, with every team still in the hunt and two games remaining for each team tomorrow, the championship is far from decided. Expect high-stakes drama as the teams take the field for the final push.
Boys U10 VW Golf Division FAA (Halliday) leads the pack after a thrilling win against FAA Double Blues and another commanding offensive performance against NEUSC (Craig) . With every game providing edge-of-your-seat action, tomorrow promises more of the same.
Boys U11 Taos Division (Group 4)
Goals have been plentiful, but it’s St. John's (Foran) ’s defensive grit that has them sitting atop the standings. With just three goals conceded and six points secured, they’ve set the bar. FAA White and FAA Navy still have a chance to challenge, but they’ll need to keep their scoring momentum going strong.
Boys U11 Tiguan Division (Group 5)
CBS (Snook) have been a force to reckon with, scoring 14 goals and conceding just three. Mt. Pearl (Black 11) is close behind, boasting a perfect record and six points. Tomorrow’s matches will decide if CBS can hold their lead or if Mt. Pearl will overtake them.
Boys U12 Atlas Division (Group 6)
The finalists are set! St. John's (Murphy) will get their rematch against FAA Courage in what promises to be a thrilling finale. After a tight 3-1 win for FAA in their initial meeting, all eyes will be on this showdown at 5:00 PM tomorrow. Both teams have faced challenges today, showing resilience and grit. Will St. John's avenge their earlier loss, or will FAA rise to the occasion again?
Boys U13 VW Buzz Division (Group 7)
The championship match is locked in: St. John's (Devereaux) will take on CBS (Lewis) for the title. CBS earned their spot after a hard-fought draw with FAA (Chitsike) in what was essentially a semifinal. Tomorrow’s final promises to be a nail-biter as these two talented teams vie for the Cup.

Tight Games on Night #1 of Rain City VW Cup!

FAA and SJSA Kick Off Battle for the Cup!

The Rain City VW Cup kicked off this evening with three tight games played between teams from St. John's and Feildians.
The evening began with a battle between U12 Championship Teams FAA (Courage) vs. SJSA (Murphy). Both teams had early chances but FAA was able to capitalize to take an early 1-0 lead on Louis Winter's strike that found the top left corner. Player of the game Nathan Slaney, followed up a short time later to give the Double Blues a two goal lead.
Ronan Chaulk battled for a loose ball and was able to finish under pressure to pull St. John's within a goal mid-way through the second half, but that was as close as the game would get, as Ruben Snook put the game out of reach with a finish off a rebound.
The second game was a U13 matchup between FAA (Parfrey) and a determined St. John's (Strong) team. This one was tight throughout. Both teams had chances but neither could get the go ahead goal. The highlight of the game came late in the second half when FAA keeper Roland Kelly made a great stop on a penalty shot to preserve the 0-0 draw.
The night concluded with two familiar foes facing off once again! SJSA U13 PYL Team were looking to continue their winning ways against FAA U13 PYL (Chitsike). An early goal by Zackary Nwokedi put FAA ahead and they would soon jump out to a 2-0 lead. Myles Burgess' goal sparked a second half comeback and SJSA battled to earn a 2-2 draw.
The tournament takes a two day break before starting again in the New Year. Games start bright and early on January 2nd! #drivethedream #chasethecup

The Rain City Volkswagen Cup is an exciting youth soccer tournament taking place on January 2nd and 3rd at the Techniplex. Featuring 36 teams across age groups 9-13, the event brings together players from six different clubs in a celebration of talent, teamwork, and competition. Highlights include the Piatto Pizza Player of the Game awards, new Rain City merchandise available for purchase, and a showcase of the latest vehicles from our sponsor, VW St. John's.
